How we behave
Players
Play by the rules, respect opponents and officials, give your best and be a good sport — win or lose.
Parents & spectators
Encourage effort over outcome, respect referees and volunteers, and let the coaches coach.
Coaches
Put safety and enjoyment first, give every player court time, and model respect and fair play.
Team officials
Uphold the club's values, follow child-safe practices, and keep basketball positive for everyone.
Player code of conduct
- Play by the rules.
- Develop a positive attitude towards your teammates and coach.
- Never argue with an umpire or official — if you disagree, have your captain, coach or manager calmly approach them during a break or after the game.
- Play to enjoy the game and improve your skills.
- Don't blame others and don't make excuses.
- Control your temper — no verbal or physical abuse of an official or player.
- Treat all players as you would like to be treated; don't distract, interfere with, bully or take unfair advantage of another player.
- Be a good sport and acknowledge good efforts from your team and the opposition.
- Work equally hard for yourself and your team.
- Co-operate with your coach, teammates, referees and opponents.
- Be SportSafe aware.
Parent & spectator code of conduct
- Get your child to training and games on time and ready to play.
- Take your turn at score-bench duty across the season.
- Help with transport when needed.
- Encourage your child and the team to play within the rules.
- Tell the coach and manager promptly about injuries, illness or absences.
- Recognise the value of volunteer coaches and support them.
- Cheer and applaud good play; accept the referee's decisions.
- Raise any concern privately and at an appropriate time — not during or straight after a game.
- Support club decisions and keep comments about your team, the opposition and officials positive.
Raising a concern: speak with your team's coach and/or manager first — privately and at an appropriate time (ideally the next day, not during or straight after a game). Where at all possible, on-court matters should be raised by the coach with the umpire or referee on the day. If a concern can't be resolved at team level, it can be escalated to the Club President. Any complaint about another club's team must go through the Club President, with the relevant coach kept informed.
Perry Lakes Hawks operates a zero-tolerance policy: abuse of referees, players, coaches or spectators can result in immediate removal from the venue — no warnings given — and repeat technical fouls carry match suspensions. Read the policy →
A child-safe club
The Sharks are committed to a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for all juniors. Our volunteers and coaches follow child-safe practices, in line with WA law and the Basketball Australia Child Safeguarding Policy.
Working with Children Checks
Any coach, assistant coach, team manager or club official who is not the parent or guardian of a child in the team they are helping must hold a current Western Australian Working with Children (WWC) Check card before taking up the role, in line with the Working with Children (Criminal Record Checking) Act 2004 (WA). The club must be able to sight the card, and no person may coach or supervise juniors until their check has been verified.
The 10 National Principles for Child Safe Organisations
Scarborough Junior Basketball Club is committed to the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations — the standards endorsed by all Australian governments to keep children and young people safe from harm.
Child safety and wellbeing is embedded in organisational leadership, governance and culture.
Children and young people are informed about their rights, participate in decisions affecting them and are taken seriously.
Families and communities are informed and involved in promoting child safety and wellbeing.
Equity is upheld and diverse needs respected in policy and practice.
People working with children and young people are suitable and supported to reflect child safety and wellbeing values in practice.
Processes for complaints and concerns are child focused.
Staff and volunteers are equipped with the knowledge, skills and awareness to keep children and young people safe through ongoing education and training.
Physical and online environments promote safety and wellbeing while minimising the opportunity for children and young people to be harmed.

Refund policy
Registration secures your child's place for the winter season and covers team entry, court hire and administration — much of which the club commits and pays in advance. Refunds are therefore limited, and are handled as set out below.
How refunds work
The club refunds only the Scarborough (SJBC) club fee. The Perry Lakes Hawks association fee and the Basketball WA fee are set and refunded by those bodies, not by the club.
- Before the third game of the regular season: the club fee is refunded, less a flat $20 administration fee. The $20 fee is waived (full club fee refunded) if the club is unable to place your child in a team.
- After the third game of the regular season: no refund, other than in the exceptional circumstances below.
Exceptional circumstances. Where a player cannot continue due to a season-ending injury or illness (with a medical certificate), or a permanent move interstate or overseas, a refund may be considered by the committee.
No change-of-mind refunds. Refunds are not provided for a change of mind, loss of form, or team or grade placement.
Uniform. Any refund is paid once the club playing singlet has been returned undamaged. A $50 fee applies to a singlet not returned, or returned lost or damaged.
KidSport. KidSport vouchers cannot be reimbursed by the club — apply for and receive yours before registering.
To request a refund, email treasurer@scarboroughsharks.asn.au with your child's name, team and the reason. Refunds remain subject to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
